Al principi de la tercera guerra carlina (1871), un jove seminarista, Fèlix Quintana, abandona el seminari de Girona per dirigir-se a la Garrotxa i unir-se a l'exèrcit del general Pep Ayats, el Coix (personatge basat en lhistòric general Savalls). L'obra ressegueix l'evolució personal de Fèlix Quintana i també narra la seva història d'amor amb Lena Grau, filla d'un industrial olotí partidari dels liberals.
